Created by artist and writer Matt Chun with Alyson O’Brien, who is an associate editor at Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing, and Tess Cullity, who works as an editor at Scribble, in consultation with Palestinian activists including Sara Saleh, the letter says: “We note the enthusiasm with which the children’s literature industry has mobilized following the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, issuing statements of solidarity while creating new imprints and publications for justice. In contrast, the authors write, “the industry has largely remained silent” on the Israeli attacks on Palestine.

“We understand that witnessing and naming play an important role in change. What we are witnessing is called genocide. With this letter, we hope to normalize this conversation within the publishing industry, the arts community at large and beyond; bringing us closer to a tipping point and to Palestinian liberation.

Among the signatories of the letter are writers, artists and activists including Amy McQuire, Kirli Saunders, Blak Douglas, Karen Wyld, Yassmin Abdel-Magied, Randa Abdel-Fattah, Yumi Stynes and Hoda Afshar.

“In addition to those directly involved in the production of children’s literature / YA, I was really encouraged to see the signatures of booksellers, librarians, critics, educators, comic book artists and many more,” said Chun. . Books + Publishing, noting that he also hopes to see people “making public statements and commitments outside the letter, and ideally concrete actions in terms of publishing the results”.
