It seems to be the new favorite pastime of any filmmaker who hasn’t made a Marvel movie (okay, and for some of those who have makes mcu movies, too) is from dunk on Marvel Studios. Martin Scorsese went viral a few years ago for saying that Marvel movies are not “cinema”. From that point on, Scorsese went from author to “that guy who hates superhero movies.” The response got so out of hand that Scorsese had to take time off from his busy schedule to write an editorial for The New York Times explaining why he was critical of films made by Marvel Studios. Now it’s Denis Villeneuve’s turn to piss off Marvel.
In a recent interview with a Spanish newspaper El Mundo, interviewer Luis Martínez discusses Scorsese’s take on Marvel films, to which the Dune The director responds, “Maybe the problem is, we’re in front of too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a ‘cut and paste’ of others.” He adds, “Maybe these types of movies turned us into zombies a little bit… But big and expensive movies of great value, there are many today. I don’t feel at all capable of being pessimistic.
that of Villeneuve Dune has a Marvel-sized budget; it is not an arthouse film. If anything, it should be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. Villeneuve recognizes him in the interview and he expresses that he has nothing against this kind of big budget and high profile films. “You only have to think of the golden age of Hollywood to see that commercial films can make a different artistic proposition and, therefore, a political one,” he says. “I never felt like a loss or an obstacle to have a generous budget to do what I wanted to do. Upside down. Who says a big budget movie can’t be artistically relevant at the same time? I am currently thinking of people like Christopher Nolan or Alfonso Cuarón.
To be fair, Villeneuve isn’t saying that all Marvel movies are bad or that they have no artistic merit. He’s only criticizing the stereotypical storylines featured in many of these movies, which is fair. Not all Marvel directors are is going to be Taika Waititi or James Gunn, taking the risks necessary to make the movies more exciting. But we can’t wait to hear his thoughts if he is always offered to lead his own Marvel movie.
