Before Giannis Antetokounmpo became NBA champion and Finals MVP with the Milwaukee Bucks, many were urging him to leave Milwaukee and join a superteam elsewhere. According to Giannis, the teammates he won everything with were good enough for him.
When asked during NBA All-Star media availability why he never left the Bucks to hunt a ring elsewhere, Giannis said “I’ve joined the best before. Khris Middleton, Jrue Holiday, Brook Lopez, Bobby Portis.” Having won a title with that core, Giannis was able to deliver a championship to a city and organization that truly values their star talent. While many have tried and failed, Giannis stuck with the franchise that drafted him and succeeded until he was able to deliver a title.
The Milwaukee Bucks are once again title contenders this season, as Giannis once again makes the short list of MVP favorites. Leading the league in scoring while anchoring a dominating defense, Giannis does it all for Milwaukee. That level of play has been consistent for him over the past few years, but it’s really been elevated in this 2021 championship run.
Breaking all sorts of records, Giannis dominated the entire 2021 playoffs, capping them with a Finals MVP award and a 50-point closing performance. His loyalty to his city is admirable, but according to him, the decision has always been easy.
