Samantak Das, pro-vice chancellor of the prestigious Jadavpur University in Kolkata, was found hanged on Wednesday afternoon at his south Kolkata residence, having apparently committed suicide, police said.
Law enforcement sources said his body was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his residence and the means of suspension was a belt. No suicide note was found near the body.
“Although preliminary findings suggest the reason for his death was suicide, nothing can be officially confirmed unless the post-mortem report arrives. We have sent the body for an autopsy and hope to receive the report from ‘here on Thursday,’ a survey official said.
Das completed his degree and post-graduation in English Literature from Jadavpur University only. Previously, he was associated with the English department of Visva Bharati University in Santiniketan.
In 2005, he joined the Department of Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University. He was also associated with the university’s Rabindranath School of Studies.
Before becoming the university’s pro-vice chancellor, Das had also headed the department of comparative literature.
He was extremely popular among university students due to his communicative style of teaching.
The entire university campus plunged into gloom after news of his death.
The police are trying to find out from his colleagues if he was suffering from any form of mental breakdown.
