Literature Club offers connection to older people in Surrey – Peace Arch News

Seniors Week is starting soon, making it the perfect time for seniors in Surrey and White Rock to listen to live readings of unique books, selected especially for them.

Seniors’ Week runs from June 5-11, but the program is here to stay much longer, notes a May 30 statement from Surrey Libraries, which offers the service in partnership with the Brella Community Services Society.

The Literature Club program will provide free audio services over the phone, allowing seniors to come together, even when separated, in their homes while listening to live entertainment.

The live listening program began in 2020, coinciding with pandemic restrictions that left many people, especially older people, looking to connect with others while staying safe.

“The Literature Club may be a little different from what people usually expect. But it offers a unique experience that you won’t find anywhere else,” promises Edwin Chau, coordinator of Seniors’ Center Without Walls at the Brella Community Service Society.

Stories ranging from recognizable classics to horror thrillers – and everything in between – can be heard during the sessions. At the end of each meeting, everyone will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and observations with the group and engage in meaningful conversations.

“You feel nurtured,” said Lynda Brown, who is a regular listener. “Someone took the time to find a book for you, read for you, and do something for you. It makes you feel loved and it’s engaging for the spirit. There’s something so fascinating to listen to someone else read to you.

Another listener, Joan Bywater, shared in the statement how the program came at the right time to help her through the pandemic, allowing her to socialize while observing social distancing measures.

The Literature Club will run every Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. for anyone interested, not just seniors. Call Brella’s Seniors’ Center Without Walls at 604-531-9400 to register.
