Delhi Police have arrested a man and apprehended a minor for allegedly stabbing an auto mechanic to death in the Mahendra Park area of northwest Delhi, police said on Monday. The victim was identified as Dharmender Verma from Dehradun, they said.
Police say the defendants were inspired by gangster movies and wanted to make easy money by robbing people because their families were in debt.
“With the arrest of a defendant and a minor, a team from Mahendra Park Police Station solved an indiscriminate murder case within 24 hours of being registered and recovered the weapon – a dagger used to commit the crime that was purchased online,” said Usha Rangnani, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West).
“While on patrol on Saturday, our team noticed a stabbed person near the traffic light at Jahangirpuri metro station. He was immediately taken to hospital where he died while undergoing treatment,” she said. .
The victim told the hospital police that he had an argument with two unidentified men near the RU Nagar Gate Jahangirpuri service road.
As the feud escalated, one of them grabbed him from behind and the other stabbed him in the upper abdomen and ran away, DCP said.
“A case has been registered and an investigation has been opened. Several teams have been formed and during the investigation several CCTV cameras of all possible entrances and exits to the incident site have been thoroughly analysed” , Rangnani said.
In one footage, two men were seen arguing with the victim, after which their entry and exit routes were established, police said.
Based on information, technical surveillance and local intelligence collected, the team raided several locations even as the accused tried to evade capture, they said.
After several attempts, the police arrested the two. The man was identified as Deendayal and another was later discovered to be a minor, she said.
During the interrogation, the accused confessed that after accidentally colliding with the victim, a quarrel broke out between them. The victim slapped one of them and asked them to walk properly, which apparently annoyed them so much that they stabbed him to death, the officer said.
“The defendants revealed that they were influenced by the lifestyle of the big gangsters as shown in movies and web series. Their families were in debt and to make a quick buck, they planned to rob people, to which they also ordered a dagger online and started roaming the area committing thefts,” DCP said.
