With the holiday road check season underway, mounted police have released a heart-wrenching dash cam video of a drunk driver sneaking on and off the road through Richmond, Vancouver and finally Burnaby – where he smashes a fire hydrant then a stop sign before finally abandoning the wheel.

Burnaby RCMP say footage from January 2021 is a stark reminder of the dangers of drunk driving and urges everyone to watch them.

The video is indeed frightening. Images from the drunk driver’s own on-board camera show the car repeatedly veering into oncoming lanes and into a ditch, and lighting both a red light and a stop sign before finally s ‘to crush.

“It is shocking that no one has been killed or injured, including the driver,” said the Burnaby RCMP Corporal. Mike Kalanj. “This driver made the decision to put himself and others at risk when he got behind the wheel that night and drove through three cities.”

The video, which was obtained from the driver’s own on-board camera via a search warrant, was taken on January 8.

Several callers alerted police just before midnight of a Cadillac Escalade that struck parked cars and a fire hydrant near Royal Oak Avenue and Marine Drive, sending water into the street and flooding neighboring homes.

Even after this collision, the driver continued to drive, veering again in the wrong lane, then hitting a stop sign just before the RCMP arrived. “At that time, the SUV was badly damaged and a tire was missing,” Kalanj said in a statement.

In August, a 62-year-old Burnaby man was convicted of impaired driving and given a one-year driving ban and a $ 1,000 fine. The trail of destruction caused approximately $ 28,000 in flood damage to homes and $ 6,600 in damage to city property.

“We urge everyone to watch this video. This is what impaired driving looks like, ”Kalanj said.
