the University of Hawaii in Hilo will co-host the 20th Biennial Conference on Literature and Hawaiithe children, a series of virtual events to help promote appreciation of children’s literature. The free online conference will run from June 4-8 and is sponsored by Youth literature Hawaii. It will feature stories, educational workshops and keiki-friendly presentations around this year’s theme, âA Network Full of Stories, Imagined and Realâ.
The 2021 conference will take place on Oahu and Hawaii Isle. It will air online June 4-8 from Tenney Theater and Chaminade University. EUH Hilo will host a virtual event on June 7, which requires separate registration.
Hawaii native Lehua Parker, author of several award-winning books including 2017 NnÄ Award nominee One boy, no water, will headline conference events on Oahu.
Hawaii Island award-winning artist and author Caren Loebel-Fried, known for her hand-colored, environmentally-focused block prints, will be the featured guest at EUH The Hilo Event.
“The EUH Hilo English Department Excited To Host Children’s Literature Day Hawaii webinar, âsaid Kirsten MÃ¸llegaard, professor and president of EUH The Hilo English Department. âIn hosting the Hilo event, we have made every effort to celebrate the creativity, artistry and joy of working with children and literature that exist in our local communities.
The Hilo campus event will also feature EUH Hilo College Justine Mattos, assistant professor of performing arts who recently received the EUH Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching and Kamalani johnson, speaker and program specialist at Ka Haka ‘Ula O KeÊ»elikÅlani Hawaiian Language College. Other speakers include a panel discussion of children’s librarians from Kona, Kealakekua and Hilo public libraries.
The audience will also hear from local and national writers, artists, educators, academics and performers during the conference.
