Which previous films are suitable?

Will Halloween Kills adapt previous films? Some elements appear to have been taken from the now non-canonical Halloween movies.

The first trailer for Halloween kills gives audiences a taste of what to expect in this new story, as well as how Michael Myers will escape, and among all of those clues are plenty of references to the previous one Halloween movies that are not canon now. However, some of them are too similar to the other films, giving the feeling of a smooth adaptation. The horror genre has a lot to thank John Carpenter for, because his 1978 film Halloween helped develop and popularize the slasher genre in the 1980s, and while it was not well received when it was released, it is now considered one of the best horror films ever made. Halloween makes way for a franchise with 13 films, including two remakes and a reboot trilogy.

Halloween tells the story of Michael Myers, who was sent to Smith Grove Sanatorium after killing his sister on Halloween night in 1963 when he was six years old. Fifteen years later, on October 30, 1978, Michael escaped and returned to his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he harassed Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends on Halloween night. Laurie was the sole survivor of her killing spree, and she continued to be her target in some of the sequels, but as Halloween franchise has seen some setbacks, its primary targets have also changed. The franchise is currently in the process of a reboot, with the new trilogy serving as direct sequels to the original film and ignoring all that followed.

However, the new Halloween the movies included references to those now non-canon movies, and the trailer for Halloween kills introduced others, but it also hinted at this new story taking elements from previous films and adapting them to this new era. The most notable addition is the Silver Shamrock masks from Halloween III: Season of the Witch, the only film in the franchise that is not part of Michael Myers’ script, but there are others from some of the group’s less notable films. The first is Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, which saw the title slasher go after Laurie’s daughter, Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris), after Laurie’s death, and in which after the people of Haddonfield learned that Michael was back, they had formed a crowd of lynchers.

In the Halloween kills trailer, you can see the townspeople are doing the same now that Michael has returned after all these years. Lindsey Wallace (Kyle Richards) and Tommy Doyle (Anthony Michael Hall) will join the lynch mob, the children Laurie was caring for on that terrible Halloween night in 1978. Tommy joining the hunt for Michael Myers recalls his role in Halloween: the curse of Michael Myers, only this time, he will not be moved by obsession but by justice, because he was also almost killed in 1978, but Michael Myers apparently does not kill children. Another element of Halloween 6 is the concept that Michael Myers is pure evil, which in this film was all about the cult of the Thorn, but hopefully the remaining films in the reboot trilogy will stay away from that mythical side.

Even if Halloween kills will not literally adapt to the previous one Halloween movies, it seems like it took them some specific elements to add them to the story, though it’s important to remember that trailers can be misleading at times. On the other hand, there will surely be more references to the past Halloween movies in Halloween kills, but it remains to be seen if any of them will be integral to the story, as will the lynching, Tommy Doyle, and the concept of “evil” living in Michael Myers.
